Leonard Bernstein's Candide

By Manchester Choral Society (other events)

2 Dates Through Apr 30, 2017

ABOUT ABOUT

Voltaire’s Candide is a satirical story in which the characters, regardless of social or financial status, suffer unimaginable adversity.  Just when it appears all will be well, even more horrible things happen!  Through comedy and Bernstein's music, its message is that one must strive to overcome adversity and not passively accept problems in the belief that all is for the best.  Voltaire suggests that the individual must actively, physically work for personal happiness.

This Bernstein concert version, with full orchestra, will feature several soloists. Brendan Buckley is cast as Candide; Emily Thorner as Cunegonde; Emily Jaworski as The Old Lady;  Krystal Morin as Paquette; Sean Parr as Pangloss, Martin, and Cacambo; Rob McGinness as Maximilian and Captain; and Michael Dodge as Governor, Vanderdendur, and Ragotski.

The Manchester Choral Society is an auditioned community chorus which has become a magnet for serious choral singers throughout southern New Hampshire.

The musical director, Dr. Dan Perkins, has served over two decades as Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at Plymouth State University.  Dr. Perkins is also Music Director of the New Hampshire Master Chorale, and New Hampshire Friendship Chorus.
